OUTDOOR LIFE

Besides all the huge restaurant scene, the nighttime fun and the endless shopping opportunities, Fort Lauderdale also offers plenty of outdoor daytime activities besides its world famous beaches.

OUTDOOR ACTIVITY ON THE WATER:

Fort Lauderdale is the yachting capital of the world and the largest yachts on earth regularly come to visit. Even among the non millionaires, there is a very active boating community in Fort Lauderdale. Boats in Fort Lauderdale come in all sizes and shapes!!!

There are also kayak and paddle board rentals available.

You can of course go out to the ocean and fish, scuba dive, snorkel and boat.

WILDLIFE

Alligators while famous South Florida residents are not common sights in Fort Lauderdale (they live in the Everglades for the most part) but if you live on the beach, Pelicans – another local staple – are a common sight.

Plenty of large birds live around the downtown area including Muscovy Ducks, Herons and Egrets (several different species of them), Ibises etc..

Manatees and Iguanas are also plentiful.

The manatees tend to come inland during the winter because sea temperature is colder. You are a lot less likely to spot them during the Summer.

PLANTS

South Florida enjoys a Sub Tropical Climate type. Climate type changes once you go north of Palm Beach County and the vegetation changes alongside: no more Coconut Trees or Royal Poincianas that will not survive a single day of frost.

The South Florida coastline is supposed to be frost free. Record low temperatures in Broward County have reached 28 F but that was further inland.

Given this blessed climate, there is no such thing as a “House Plant” in Fort Lauderdale.
